What Is Prayer?
The most basic definition of prayer is simply talking to God. It is not passive reflection, nor is it meditation. Prayer is directly addressing God. It’s the way the believer can, through Jesus Christ, communicate their emotions, needs, and desires to God and to fellowship with Him.
Prayer can be audible. It can also be silent. Prayer can be formal or informal. All Christian prayer is addressed to God the Father, through Jesus Christ as our mediator, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
All prayer must be offered in faith. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. James 1:6

PRAYER RHYTHMS
-
Say a quick prayer of thanks or recite the Lord’s Prayer before you roll out of bed. This prayer may be something as simple as, “Good morning, Lord. Thank you for taking us safely through the night. I give this day to You. Amen.”
-
Carve out time with God before heading out for work. Start small; maybe 10 minutes. Give God thanks for the day, pray for your family, ask for God’s protection.
-
Consider talking to God as you drive to work. Ask for His help as you review the day in your mind.
-
Pause at lunch to pray for a friend or a specific need.
-
Try to set aside time for God in the evening. Again, if you are new to prayer, start small; maybe 10 minutes. Use this time to pray for friends, people you know are struggling, your church, your family, and anything else that comes to mind. Use this time to confess to God any sins you have committed during the day.
-
As you roll into bed, ask God to watch over you and your family through the night. Commit yourself to Him. Keep it simple. Consider this: “Father, thank you for this day. Protect us through this night. Help us to get restful sleep. We commit ourselves into your care. Amen.”
-
Determine visual reminders to pray. Pray for your family as you see their rooms or pictures. Silently pray for coworkers as you pass them at work. Pray for people you encounter as you shop.
-
Quietly repeat simple one-line prayers throughout your day. These can be something like, “Lord, help me.” “I am Yours,” or others as you drive, walk, or work.
-
Find short scripture verses and whisper them over and over until they settle in your mind.
